Our family moved from the Falkland Islands to farm sheep in Patagonia, Southern Argentina in 1863, well before Robert Leroy Parker and Harry Longabaugh (a.k.a. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) experienced the long cold winters there. The firm's hat making activities in Buenos Aires go back over 125 years. The importance of our roots is reflected in our truly Argentine range of products, many unique outside of the country.
There are now quite a number suppliers of Polo Belts or so-called Gaucho Belts and Polo Dog Collars but you would be hard pressed to get two words of Spanish (never mind "Lunfardo", our equivalent of Cockney Rhyming Slang) from any of them. The huge interest in our Estribos Polo Belts has generated a wave of copy cats, and whilst we are flattered we would suggest that you buy an original.
"¡Más argentino imposible!"
"Impossible to be more Argentine!"
The five of us moved from Buenos Aires to set up the UK end of the business in 2004 and we travel all over the UK attending well over 100 shows a year. Our presentation is traditionally Argentine, bringing together aspects of the Polo world, traditional Argentine 'Talabarterias' (saddlery and leather goods shops) and life on the Campo (ranch).
Our name "Estribos" means stirrups in Spanish and reflects the close relationship we have with the horse world and its respect for good leather.
"No seas Boludo ... ¡Comprate un cinto Estribos!"
Don't be Daft, buy yourself an Estribos belt!
Come and brighten our day by visiting the Real Argentine Leather Folks, and sample some of our product ranges that truly differentiate us from the rest – including our Stunning Coloured Carpincho Belts, our Bespoke Belt and Collar Service, our Polo Brow Bands, our Estribos “Taba” Alpargatas (Argentine Espadrilles), our Fur Lined Carpincho Gloves, our Traditional Argentine Fur Felt Hats, our Fine Bolu Ale (made using Dulce de Leche) .......
We look forward to sharing 2018 with you!
Hasta Luego, y Saludos,
The Argentine Belt Smiths
